“Cirqadia is Liverpool’s brilliant and bold new Circus Festival!”
Our friends at Freefall Circus had been dreaming of their own Circus Festival for a long time. They’d been sowing the seed by teaching rafts of performers over the years and by talking to the right people about their dream. When Freefall asked at the start of the year if we were interested in getting involved in something sounding so good – and so niche, we couldn’t resist.
Cirqadia Festival of Contemporary Circus opened the eyes of Liverpool audiences to the huge talent across the UK. Over three days, we programmed disciplines as diverse as rope, Chinese Pole, cloudswing, silks, flying pole, aerial hoop as well as ground-based acrobatics.
The festival Scratch Night gave local artists an opportunity to showcase their skills for a sold-out venue. The following night was given over to professional circus artists Sadiq Ali with The Chosen Haram and Laura Murphy, who performed her internationally acclaimed show Contra. Over the three days, Sadiq and Laura taught a workshop each and the festival concluded with a symposium exploring the creative processes behind the The Chosen Haram and Contra and the artists’ stance to gender, identity, censorship and queerness.
We were involved in managing the various strands of the project, planning the production and the event delivery. Small team, great new festival and a brilliant experience!
