It was high time for the next instalment of our very own Soup Kitchen with music, seeing so many homeless people in the streets of Liverpool. We gave “Soup & Song Sundays” a bit of a face-lift and launched it in style with its first instalment Space Shuttle 2020.
Bang on 2pm, we welcomed lots of homeless people, who had heard through Crisis, Whitechapel, the Basement and the Big Issue about the free food and clothes at our event at the Black-E and had been waiting for the doors to open. We were really happy to provide shelter, hot homemade soup, fruit and biscuits on this cold and stormy afternoon; and most people stayed on after having food: to chill, to listen to the music, to drum along with Busk With Us, and a lot of them got stuck in at the arts table.
Homeless people and refugees were joined by storm-defying visitors, who came to listen to DJ Jo Joy’s cracking afternoon set and the beautiful singer-songriter trio Dawn and the Embers. Whole families turned up with their kids in tow, who loved the biscuits, the arts table and the Black-E building in general. Everyone was enjoying themselves together, which meant a lot to us because it showed that our concept of bringing people together with free food and music in a safe space works – bingo!
Thanks to all musicians, artists and performers who made this stormy Sunday afternoon special. And of course a huge thank you to our wonderful friends and volunteers, you ROCK! And last, but by no means least, thanks to all homeless people, refugees and all others in need who had the courage to join us at the Black-E.
Keep your eyes peeled for the next Soup & Song Sunday to be announced right here
